«Då Folkemusikkveka på Ål i Hallingdal i 2019 tinga ny musikk til Haugtussa, visste eg med ein gong at eg ville kvede forteljinga, for Garborg nyttar sjølv ord som kvad og song om verket sitt», seier Øyonn Groven Myhren. «Eg tenkte først å kvede forteljinga utan instrumentfølgje, men ettersom arbeidet voks, ville eg ha innslag av seljefløyte, klimpring, felespel og slagverk. For i Garborgs tekst finst både fløyte, harpelåt, langeleik, stillare strengir, fele-ljom, springar, sylvklokke-kling, bjøllur, ringlig, bummel, bammel, gryte og kjel som læt ein lått, som ingen visste, og meir til. Eg var heldig å få ja frå musikarane Rasmus Kjorstad og Tomas Nilsson, og då hadde eg alt dette å boltre meg i.»

I Haugtussa følgjer vi tenåringsjenta Veslemøy som er synsk og kan sjå både huldrefolk, troll, hekser og dei som er døde. Vi møter henne heime på garden og som gjetarjente i fjellet der ho blir kjærast med Jon. Då Jon svik henne, tar sorg og nedbrytande krefter overhand. På motsett side står Veslemøys døde søster som ei klok og varm rettleiar. Vi følgjer Veslemøys kamp i striden mellom lys og mørker, og til slutt syner «visdoms volve» seg.

Skiftinga mellom årstidene spelar ei viktig rolle i forteljinga, og utgjevinga er delt inn i tre årstidsbolkar: Vol. 1: vinter, Vol. 2: vår og sumar, og Vol. 3: haust og vinter. Vol. 1 kjem ut digitalt samstundes med den fysiske utgåva, medan digitale lanseringar av Vol. 2 og Vol. 3 kjem seinare, på to ulike tidspunkt.

Øyonn Groven Myhren blir rekna som ei av dei fremste folkemusikarane våre og har vunne fleire førstepremiar frå Landskappleiken. Ho har vore sentral i ei rekkje prosjekt, blant anna i kvedargruppa Dvergmål, der ho har gitt ut to album: Visor og kvæde frå Blåberglandet (1996) og Song i himmelsalar (2004). CDen Nordjordet (2018) er frukt av eit mangeårig samarbeid med Bugge Wesseltoft. Her er òg verd å nemne I Jolo (1998) saman med Eilert Hægeland og Alf Tveit, Runarslaget (2021) saman med SISU slagverksensemble, og Tìle (2022) saman med Sidiki Camara og Olav Torget. Ho har arbeidd med mellomalder-songar gjennom ensemblet Aurora Borealis, med albuma Harpa (1997) og Wizlavs viser (2018), og i duoen Sogesong (med Anne Hytta) med Så vide fara dei lindaord (2017). Ho har sett søkelys på norsk 1600-talls-musikk gjennom ensemblet Barokk Boreal med albuma Ti bud i sanger (2020) og Sanger om død og glede (2022). I 2001 skreiv Odd Nordstoga og Groven Myhren tingingsverket Nivelkinn, der urframføringa kom ut på CD og fekk Spellemannprisen i kategorien Folkemusikk/Gammaldans i 2002. Som soloartist har ho gitt ut albuma Akkedoria frå Kristiania (2003) og Grisilla i Gullveven (2008), og ho har mottatt prisar som Norsk folkemusikkfonds folkemusikkpris (1997), Sagaprisen (1997) og Gammeleng-prisen (2022).

"When Folk Music Week in Ål, Hallingdal, in 2019 commissioned new music for Haugtussa, I knew immediately that I wanted to sing the story, as Garborg himself uses words like 'kvad' (poetry) and 'song' about his work," says Øyonn Groven Myhren. "Initially, I thought of singing the story without instrumental accompaniment, but as the work progressed, I wanted elements of willow flute, plucking, fiddling, and percussion. In Garborg's text, there are flute, harp tunes, langeleik (a traditional Norwegian zither), quieter strings, fiddle resonance, springar (a traditional dance), silver bell sounds, bells, ringing, drumming, and more that make a melody, like no one knew, and then some. I was fortunate to receive a yes from musicians Rasmus Kjorstad and Tomas Nilsson, and then I had all of this to immerse myself in."

In Haugtussa, we follow the teenage girl Veslemøy, who is clairvoyant and can see both huldrefolk (hidden folk), trolls, witches, and the deceased. We meet her at home on the farm and as a shepherdess in the mountains where she falls in love with Jon. When Jon betrays her, sorrow and destructive forces take over. On the opposite side stands Veslemøy's dead sister as a wise and warm guide. We follow Veslemøy's struggle in the battle between light and darkness, and eventually, the "wise seer" reveals herself.

The shift between seasons plays an important role in the narrative, and the release is divided into three seasonal sections: Vol. 1: winter, Vol. 2: spring and summer, and Vol. 3: autumn and winter. Vol. 1 is released digitally simultaneously with the physical edition, while digital releases of Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 come later, at two different times.

Øyonn Groven Myhren is considered one of our foremost folk musicians and has won several first prizes from Landskappleiken. She has been central to various projects, including the vocal group Dvergmål, where she has released two albums: Visor og kvæde frå Blåberglandet (1996) and Song i himmelsalar (2004). The CD Nordjordet (2018) is the result of a long-standing collaboration with Bugge Wesseltoft. Worth mentioning is also I Jolo (1998) with Eilert Hægeland and Alf Tveit, Runarslaget (2021) with SISU percussion ensemble, and Tìle (2022) with Sidiki Camara and Olav Torget. She has worked on medieval songs through the ensemble Aurora Borealis, with albums Harpa (1997) and Wizlavs viser (2018), and in the duo Sogesong (with Anne Hytta) with Så vide fara dei lindaord (2017). She has shed light on Norwegian 1600s music through the Barokk Boreal ensemble with albums Ti bud i sanger (2020) and Sanger om død og glede (2022). In 2001, Odd Nordstoga and Groven Myhren composed the commissioned work Nivelkinn, with the premiere released on CD, receiving the Spellemann Prize in the Folk Music/Old Dance category in 2002. As a solo artist, she has released the albums Akkedoria frå Kristiania (2003) and Grisilla i Gullveven (2008), and she has received awards such as the Norwegian Folk Music Fund's Folk Music Prize (1997), Sagaprisen (1997), and Gammeleng Prize (2022).
